Couple’s Counseling

Being in a long-term relationship can be very difficult. Initially, being with a partner was wonderful, but as we age, we grow and change, and our relationship also needs to grow and change.   Life throws so much at us:  children, illness, job loss and changes, family conflict, stress, financial difficulties etc.  It can be overwhelming to manage the day-to-day busyness of life and still make time to work on growing your relationship with your partner.


Having a good marriage or relationship is hard work. But, like a flower that is never watered, it will wither and die if ignored.  It’s easy to get so busy with life that you ignore doing deliberate things to grow your relationship.


Healthy relationships allow partners to thrive and become happy and fulfilled individuals.


Couple’s counseling can help you discover ways to repair or rebuild your relationship.  Couple’s counseling can also help you figure out whether it’s time to move on and to end your relationship.


Couple’s counseling sessions are 50 or 90 minutes long and typically occur on a weekly basis.  My couple’s counseling approach is to create a safe, nonjudgemental, and respectful space where couple’s can talk openly and honestly identify the issues and conflict triggers in their relationship.  We start with an intake session in which you share about your relationship, what you like most and what you’d like to change.  We work jointly to establish goals for therapy that are best for you.  I admire the work of John and Julie Gottman, and use the learnings they’ve developed from robust research to guide my approach.   I currently have my Gottman Level One Certification.  The Gottmans have authored several best-selling book, including The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country’s Foremost Relationship Expert.

I also work from at attachment based perspective using Emotionally Focused Therapy, which is based on the teachings of Sue Johnson.  She has authored several books such as Hold Me Tight, Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love.
