Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for Trauma and Toxic Relationships
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, is a research-backed gentle yet powerful therapy that helps your brain heal from difficult or distressing experiences. When we think about painful memories, our bodies often respond with heavy emotions—sadness, fear, confusion, or even physical discomfort. ART works by helping your brain “re-file” those memories so they no longer trigger the same painful responses.
The memory isn’t erased—you still know what happened—but the emotional weight that came with it can be lifted.
TL;DR: What You Need to Know About ART
ART is a research-backed therapy technique that helps you resolve PTSD from traumas, difficult emotions and challenging mental health issues.
ART is a research-backed therapy technique that helps you heal from painful memories—without reliving them. Gentle eye movements guide your brain to release the emotional weight so you can feel calmer and more at peace
It helps with:
Single incident traumas like car accidents, other accidents, intense verbal or physical altercations, and loss of a loved one.
Multiple incident traumas such as emotional or physical abuse
Anxiety, Depression and low self-worth
Recovery from narcissistic abuse and toxic relationships
TL;DR: What You Need to Know About ART
ART helps you heal from painful memories without having to relive them.
It uses gentle eye movements to calm your body and guide your brain in “re-filing” distressing memories.
The memory stays, but the emotional pain attached to it fades—often within just a few sessions.
People use ART for trauma, anxiety, grief, phobias, overcoming narcissistic abuse and other overwhelming experiences.
Many clients describe ART as fast, effective, and surprisingly gentle.
ART is different from EMDR. It’s a newer therapy that combines the best of EMDR, hypnosis and trauma treatments.

ART Uses Eye Movements
One of the unique things about ART is the use of guided eye movements. These gentle back-and-forth movements help your mind and body work together in a new way. They can:
Calm your nervous system so you feel safe and supported.
Connect the thinking and feeling parts of your brain, helping you see things from a new perspective.
Interrupt old negative thought patterns and make room for healthier ones.
Support your brain in replacing upsetting images with more peaceful, healing ones—without you having to relive all the details.
What Happens in an ART Session?
In an ART session, your therapist will guide your eyes back and forth while you focus on a memory or situation you’d like to change your response to. This process is calming, and you are always in control. You can share as much—or as little—as you want about the memory.
As your brain works with the memory, you’ll have the chance to “update” the images and feelings attached to it. This is called voluntary image replacement. When that happens, the memory becomes far less painful, and your body can finally relax.
Your brain then naturally “re-files” the memory in its new, healthier form. This process is called memory reconsolidation. What once felt heavy and overwhelming can begin to feel manageable, or even neutral.

Frequently Asked Questions

Individual sessions involve us talking about the things that are most important to you. I intentionally create a relaxed, safe and supportive environment so you feel comfortable talking and sharing your thoughts and feelings.
Although I have a rough plan of the roadmap I think is most effective to help you, I gear each session to what you need most to talk about that day.
Typically, we spend time exploring your past and how that impacts your current beliefs and behaviors. We also set mutually agreed upon goals to guide the process, or roadmap we’ll use during therapy to make the life transformation you want.
I believe that therapy is a relationship. I work hard to ensure we are building the type of nonjudgemental connection that will help you find success in therapy. Research shows one of the most important factors in your success is the quality of our relationship.

Great question!
I am different from most therapists in that my style is very direct. I share information, offer suggestions and don’t shy away from challenging you to consider making changes to your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
Although I always endeavor to be warm and empathetic, I want you to get results. I believe you are paying me for my many years of education and experience.
I am the type of therapist I would want for myself.

This varies based on your time and financial resources.
Most of my clients start out weekly and then transition to twice per month and then eventually once per month.

Everyone’s therapy experience is unique to them. One of the most important factors in your success is your desire to change. I’ve found that my most successful clients attend sessions on a regular basis and are willing to do exercises and implement suggestions in-between appointments.
Research shows most clients feel much better after 12-15 sessions.
I have clients that meet regularly until they feel they have accomplished the majority of their goals and then return on a quarterly or twice yearly basis for a check-in.
Those desiring to “fast-track” their therapy can opt to participate in a therapy intensive. You can learn more about therapy intensives HERE.
-
Neither is better. Research shows you can achieve the same results from either in-person or online therapy. The choice comes down to personal preference, along with both your and my availability. Many of my online clients prefer the efficiency of not wasting travel time to and from my office. Others prefer the confidentiality of online therapy.
-
Individual sessions typically last 50 - 80 minutes and occur weekly or bi-weekly.
Therapy intensives are intentionally designed to jumpstart your progress and help you to feel better faster. They range from 4 to 8 to weekend intensives and can cover the same ground you would in months of therapy.
I conduct intensives both in-person and online for your convenience.
